Son of Herbert and Miriam Howarth, of Blue Sloops Hotel, Dronfield, Derbyshire. Went to France on 27th August 1915. Killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 40, during the attack on the German positions near Ovillers, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Buried: Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood, France. Plot 5, Row H, Grave 18.
