He was born at Manchester and lived at 17 Mary Street, Harpur Hey, Manchester. Son of William and Hannah Hovell, of Brooklands, Cheshire; Husband of Fanny Hovell, of Milton Cottage, John Street, Sale, Cheshire. He was a tutor and lecturer at Manchester University, from 1911-to 1914. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 29th June 1915. He joined the 1st Battalion on 21st July 1916 and was killed in action, on 12th August 1916, aged 28, by gas poisoning whilst taking cover in the entrance of an old mine shaft near Vermelles, France.
