Born and lived in Halifax, Yorkshire. Son of George William and Clara Hirst, of 1, Ivy Terrace, Savile Park, Halifax. He was a grocer prior to enlisting on 1st June 1915, at Buxton, Derbyshire. He went to France on 6th March 1916 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 30th March 1916. He was admitted to hospital at Etaples, France 20th September 1917 suffering from trench fever. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship New Haven, on 26th September 1917. He returned to France on 25th January 1918 and died of wounds on 23rd July 1918, aged 22.
