Son of Joseph And Dorothy H. Hird, of Ulverston, Lancashire; Husband of Sarah McGregor Hird, of Market Place, Ulverston. He was a grocer prior to enlisting 17th May 1917 at Lancaster. He was transferred to the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry 19th February 1918. He was then transferred to the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France 22nd October 1918. He died, 14th November 1918, aged 35, from pneumonia at 74 General Hospital, Trouville, France.
