Lance Corporal James Albert Hillyard

Battalion : 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born at Nottingham; son of James and Ann Hillyard. Husband of Louie Hillyard, of 14 Union Street, of Glasshouse Street, Nottingham. He was a Railway Labourer prior to enlisting 14th June 1899 in the the 4th Derbyshire Regiment.
He served in the South African Campaign, from 11th January 1900 to the 9th May 1901, gaining the South African (Queen’s) Medal, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He remained in the Reserve and was a News Vendor prior to re-enlisting 14th June 1908 at Chilwell Camp into the 4th Reserve Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
He was transferred to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to Gallipoli 13th September 1915. He was appointed Lance Corporal 25th October 1915 whilst in Gallipoli. He went to France 26th June 1916 and was killed in action, 25th September 1916, during the attack near Ovillers, France during the Ballet of the Somme.
