Born at and lived at Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire. Son of Mark Smith and Elizabeth Hart, of Market Street, Chapel-en-le-Frith. He was a shirt sorter prior to enlisting 1st September 1914 at Chapel-en-le-Frith. He went to France 28th February 1915 and was killed in action, 13th June 1915, whilst serving in the line at Kemmel Belgium.
