Private George Hamer
Army Number : 102167 (formerly 6359 and 203248 5th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.)
Battalion : 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
Born at Lyonshall, Herefordshire and lived at 56, Emlyn Street, Newport, Monmouthshire. Son of George and Elizabeth Hamer. Husband of Eve Hamer. He was a delivery man prior to enlisting 7th December 1915 at Newport, Monmouthshire.
He went to France 28th February 1917 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left thigh 30th July 1917. He was treated at the 91st Field Ambulance before being transferred to No.1 Casualty Clearing Station at Choques, France and then onto 2nd Canadian General Hospital at Le Treport, 31st July 1917. He was invalided to England on the Hospital Ship Panama 9th August 1917.
He returned to France 24th March 1918 and was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 28th March 1918. He was wounded again 10th April 1918, sustaining shrapnel wounds to his right buttock and was treated at No. 10 Stationary Hospital, St. Omer, France.
He rejoined his battalion 1st May 1918 and was killed in action, 13th May 1918, aged 29, whilst serving in the line near the Chateau Segard sector, Ypres, Belgium.
