Son of Frederick and Mary Ann Hall, of 47, Richmond Road, Derby. He was a French polisher prior to enlisting into the 5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 11th April 1911 at Derby. He went to France on 25th February 1915 and was admitted to hospital at Rouen, France on 2nd April 1916 suffering from trench fever. He was transferred to England on 8th April 1916 and was discharged through termination of service on 17th April 1916.

He re-enlisted at Derby on 7th March 1917 into the 5th Reserve Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted into the 2/5th Battalion on 16th May 1917 and went to France on 17th May 1917. He was then posted into the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 10th June 1917 and was killed in action on 31st July 1917, aged 24, during the attack on the German lines near Bellewaarde Lake, Belgium.
