Born at Derby and lived at 14, Kensington Street, Derby. Son of William James and Elizabeth Ellen Goodchild. He was a Lace Threader prior to enlisting 9th September 1915 at Derby. He went to France 18th March 1916 and was killed in action, 21st January 1917, aged 21, whilst serving in the line at Foncquevillers, France.
