Born at Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. and lived at 28 Main Road, Annesley Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire. Son of Samuel and Rebecca Godley, of Portland House, Annesley Woodhouse. He was a butchers apprentice prior to enlisting 9th December 1915 at Kirkby-in-Ashfield. He was killed in action, 31st July 1917, aged 20, near Bellewarde Lake, Belgium.
Buried: Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 18. Row G. Grave 22.
