Born at Heanor, Derbyshire and lived at Nelson Street, Heanor. Son of William and Fanny Gilbert, of 51, Ray Street, Heanor. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Derby. He went to France 14th July 1915 and was killed action, 19th November 1915, aged 22, whilst serving in the line at Sanctuary Wood, Belgium.
