Born at Lambeth, Surrey and lived at 15 Block, Peabody Square, Stamford, London. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Gilbert, of London. He was a clerk prior to enlisting 24th November 1915 at Piccadilly, London. He was transferred to the Derbyshire Yeomanry, 22nd January 1917. He went to France on 24th December 1917. Was transferred to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 28th December 1917 and was killed in action, 17th February 1918, aged 39, whilst serving in the line near Poelcappelle, Belgium.
