He was commissioned in the 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 25th November 1915. He went to France 1st February 1916 and died of wounds, 23rd August 1916, received whilst serving with the 105th Trench Mortar Battery in Maltz Horn Trench, during the Battle of the Somme.
