Son of Godfrey John and Isabell Furness, of The Rowans, Alfreton, Derbyshire. He was educated at Dean Close Memorial School, Shelbourne Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Was commissioned in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 19th July 1916 and joined the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment at Montauban, France 13th October 1916. He was killed in action, on 9th February 1917, aged 18, during a raid on the German trenches near Mazingarbe, France.
