Born at Newbold, Derbyshire and lived at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of Joseph and Emma Fretwell, of 153, Sheffield Road, Stonegravels, Chesterfield. He enlisted at Chesterfield and was killed in action, 28th May 1917, age 19, during a raid on German trenches near Philosophe, France.
