He was educated at Belper Grammar School and was a clerk at F.W. Gilberts Ltd. Derby. Enlisted 18th June 1915 at Derby, was appointed Lance Corporal 6th December 1915. He went to France 6th March 1916 and was killed in action near Givenchy 18th May 1916.
