Born at Ibstock, Leicestershire and lived at Swadlincote, Derbyshire. Son of Benjamin and Louisa Fowkes, of 49, Hearthsole Road, Swadlincote. He was a Collier prior to enlisting 18th August 1915 at Derby. He went to France 16th July 1916 and was killed in action, 16th January 1918, whilst serving in the line at Philosophe, France.

Buried: Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France. Plot 3. Row B, Grave 10.
