Prior to the outbreak of war, he was in business with an uncle in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Went to France on 1st June 1916 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

“Second-Lieut. J. H. C. Fletcher

Mr. J. K. Fletcher, of Arboretum-street Nottingham, yesterday received a telegram from the War Office announcing that his son, Second Lieutenant J. Harwood C. Fletcher, of the Sherwood Foresters, had been reported missing, and believed killed. Lieutenant Fletcher, who is on his 30th year, and married was in business with an uncle at Mansfield prior to the outbreak of war, and having formerly held a commission, volunteered for service about six months ago, and had only been on active service for five weeks”
