Born at Staining, Sussex and lived at 6 Castletown, Upper Beeding, Sussex. Son of George and Elizabeth Finch, of White House Lane, Staining. Husband of Rhoda Finch, of Violet Cottage, Church Lane, Beeding, Sussex. He was a quarryman prior to enlisting on 17th April 1915. He was posted to the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 28th April 1916 and went to France on 29th August 1915. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 24th February 1916. and promoted Corporal 30th July 1916. He was awarded the M.M. (Military Medal) on 11th October 1916. He was appointed Sergeant on 26th February 1917 and was killed in action, on 1st September 1917, aged 40, by German shellfire, whilst being employed on railway maintenance, near Ypres, Belgium.
Buried: Voormezeele Enclosures No.1 and No.2, Belgium. Plot 1. Row G. Grave 36.
