Born and lived at Eckington, Derbyshire. Son of Thomas and Alice Emily Elcock, of 122, Sitwell Street, Eckington. He was a Coal Miner prior to enlisting on 31st May 1915 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire into the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. Went to France on 6th March 1916 and was posted to the 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 11th October 1916. He died of wounds, on 9th June 1917, aged 21, at St. John’s Ambulance Brigade Hospital, Etaples.
