Born and lived at Newark, Nottinghamshire. Son of Richard Cartwright East and Fanny Louisa East, of , 46 Harcourt Street, Newark. He was a moulder at Nicholson and Sons prior to enlisting 25th August 1914 at Newark. He went to France 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action, 24th April 1915, aged 23, by German Shellfire, whilst serving in the line near Kemmel, Belgium.
