Born and lived in Nottingham. Son of Edmund and Alice Duke, of 33, Thorneywood Rise, Nottingham. Was a litho transferrer (printer) prior to enlisting 2nd September 1913 at Nottingham. He went to France on 25th February 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 20, during the attack on Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
