Born at Willesden, Middlesex. Son of Alfred Shafto and Anna Clara Dornton, of 29, Woodville Gardens, Ealing, London. He was educated at Repton School, Derbyshire prior to enlisting. He went to France on 4th November 1914 and was commissioned to the 1/5th Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 23rd March 1915. He was wounded in April 1915 and killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
