Private James Alfred Dooley

Battalion: 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Hyson Green, Nottingham. Son of Alfred Henry and Emma Caroline Dooley, of 39 Pleasant Row, Hyson Green. He was a barman prior to enlisting at Nottingham, on 6th October 1903. He served in India from 19th December 1906 to 1st November 1911. He went to France on 10th October 1914 and suffered gunshot wounds to his left wrist, left groin and neck on the 8th August 1915. He was admitted to No. 18 Field Ambulance and No. 18 General Hospital at Etaples, France, on 10th August 1915. He was then transferred to England on H.S. Dieppe, 17th August 1915. He was treated at Queen Mary’s Royal Naval Hospital, Southend, and the Derby Military Hospital. He returned to France on 30th May 1916 and was killed in action on 5th July 1916 in the attack on the German positions at La Boisselle, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
