He was a mason prior to enlisting 15th October 1915 at Dundee. He went to France 11th January 1917 and was transferred to Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 2nd February 1917 and was wounded 11th February 1917. He died of wounds, 13th February 1917, aged 30. at Remy Siding, Belgium.
