Private Alexander Darling
Army Number: 76143 formerly 9909 Royal Engineers Highland Field Company.
Battalion: 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.
He was born at Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Son of John and Joan Darling, of 62, Commerce Street, Glasgow, Scotland. He was a mason prior to enlisting on 30th July 1915 at Glasgow. He was transferred to the 12th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and went to France on 11th January 1917. He was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 2nd February 1917. He suffered shrapnel wounds to his right arm on 30th June 1917 and was treated at 18 General Hospital Camieres, France, and rejoined his battalion on 13th August 1917. He was admitted to No. 2 General Hospital, Le Havre, France, on 7th December 1917 suffering from nephritis and was transferred to England. He died, 25th January 1918, at General Hospital, Newport, Wales.
