Born at Tupton, Derbyshire and lived at Creswell, Derbyshire. Son of William and Sarah Ann Darby of 131 Model Village, Creswell, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Creswell on 2nd September 1914. He went to France on 29th August 1915 and was killed in action, 10th September 1916, by German shellfire whilst on a working party near Fricourt, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
