Lance Corporal Tom Cumberlidge

Battalion: 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born and lived at Derby. Son of George and Mary Ann Cumberlidge, of 57, Dean Street, Derby. He was a Blacksmith’s Boy prior to enlisting on 29th March 1912 at Derby. He went to France on 25th February 1915 and was attached to the Machine Gun Section on 2nd March 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 7th June 1916 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 20, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
