Born at Altofts 24th September 1897, lived at Altofts, Yorkshire. Son of Allan and Sarah Ellen Crowther, of Altofts, Normanton, Yorkshire. Educated at Normanton Grammar School. He joined Leeds University O.T.C. in October 1915 and finished training at Trinity College, Cambridge. He obtained a commission in August 1916 and joined the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment at Mesnil, France 11th October 1916. He was killed in action, 24th November 1916, aged 19, during a German artillery barrage, whilst on a working party to the north of Beaumont Hamel, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
