Private Horace Crowle

He was born on 25th February 1899 at St. Blazey, Cornwall and lived at 6 Bridge Court, St. Blazey, Cornwall. Son of John and Bessie Crowle, of Blowing House, Pontsmill, Par Station, Cornwall and later of 1, Chapel Terrace, St. Blazey, Cornwall. He was a clay labourer prior to enlisting on 15th November 1915 aged 16 into the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (DCLI) at Bodmin, Cornwall. He was posted to the 9th Battalion DCLI on 21st November 1915 and went to France on 13th December 1915. He was sent back to England, being discovered to be underage on 24th April 1917. He was transferred to the 5th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (47027) and returned to France on 27th March 1918. He was transferred to the 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 31st March 1918 and was killed in action, 18th April 1918, age 19, during a German attack near Kemmel, Belgium.
