Born at Coweaddon, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Son of Samuel and Sarah Crossland, of Ryecroft, Darley Dale, Matlock, Derbyshire. He was an assistant domestic gardener prior to enlisting at Buxton, Derbyshire. He went to France on 28th July 1915 and died of wounds, 9th July 1916, aged 22, received in the attack near Fricourt, France, during the Battle of the Somme.
