Born at Hyson Green, Nottingham and lived at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Son of William Paul and Eliza Crooks, of 201, Park Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Derby. He was killed in action, 3rd September 1916, aged 18, in the British attack at Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme.
