Son of Francis and Rachel Croft, of Tibshelf, Derbyshire. He was a grain warehouseman prior to enlisting on 5th February 1916 at Nottingham. He was posted to the 19th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 11th April 1916 and went to France on 31st July 1916 and was posted to the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 5th August 1916. He was killed in action, on 3rd September 1916, aged 36, in the British Attack near Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme.
