Born at Alfreton, Derbyshire and lived at Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of Steven John and Mary Cresswell, of 9, Edward Street, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Was a coal miner and enlisted at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, 31st May 1915. Went to France on 6th March 1916 and was attached to the 16th battalion. He received gunshot wounds to his ear and head on 12th July 1916 and was treated at 133 Field Ambulance. He rejoined his battalion on 16th July 1916 and was wounded by a gunshot wound to his right side on 7th October 1916 and was sent to No.3 General Hospital, Boulogne, France. He received shrapnel wounds to his right fingers on 3rd August 1917 and was treated at No. 16 General Hospital, Le Treport, France. He was appointed Lance Corporal 2nd November 1917. After rejoining his battalion he suffered gunshot wounds to his abdomen on 14th March 1918 and subsequently died of wounds on 25th March 1918.
