Born and lived in Leeds, Yorkshire. Son of John Thomas and Jane Coyle, of 72 Stratford Street, Leeds. he was a plumber prior to enlisting in June 1917 at Leeds. He went to France on 1st April 1918 and was transferred to Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment on 2nd April 1918. He was posted to the 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 6th April 1918. He was killed in action, 14th April 1918, in the German attack on the British line near Wulverghem, Belgium.
Buried: Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 4. Row E. Grave 10.
