Born at Swadlincote, Derbyshire and lived at 11 Mayfield Road, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. Son of John and Sarah Ann Coxall, of Newhall, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 12th June 1915 at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. he went to France with the 17th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 14th April 1916. He was posted to the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 10th July 1916 and was reported wounded and missing 30th July 1916, during actions near Bethune, France.
