Battalion: 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment.

Born at Leek, Staffordshire and lived at Matlock House, Compton, Derbyshire. Son of William and Amelia Cox, of 25 Wellington Street, Leek. He was a window cleaner prior to enlisting on 30th November 1915 at Ashbourne, Derbyshire. He went to France with the 10th Battalion Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 8th July 1916 and suffered gunshot wounds to his right shoulder, on 9th August 1916. He was admitted to No. 6 General Hospital, Rouen, on 11th August 1916 before rejoining his battalion on 21st September 1916. He was admitted to Hospital in Rouen again, on 9th November 1916 suffering from muscular rheumatism. He was transferred to England on Hospital Ship Formosa, on 12th November 1916. He returned to France on 30th May 1917 and was posted to the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 22nd June 1917. He was killed in action, on 31st July 1917 in the attack on the German line near Steenbeeke, near Ypres Belgium.
