Born at Misterton, Nottinghamshire. Son of James and Hannah Cowling, of Rayton Angles, Worksop, Nottinghamshire. He was a farmworker prior to enlisting at Retford, Nottinghamshire. He served in Gallipoli during 1915 and was killed in action, 23rd September 1916, age 20, whilst serving in the line south of Thiepval, France during the Battle of the Somme.
