Born at Hansworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire. Son of John and Jane Cowley, of 44 Station Road, Bolsover. Husband of Sarah Ann Stokes (formerly Cowley), of 13, New Street, Bolsover, Derbyshire. He was a colliery labourer prior to enlisting at Bolsover. Served Gallipoli during 1915. He died of wounds, 30th September 1916, aged 30, at 2nd Eastern General Hospital, Brighton, Sussex.

Buried : Bolsover (St. Mary) New Churchyard, Derbyshire, United Kingdom. Grave 120.
