Born and lived at Spennymoor, County Durham. Son of William and Alice Cowley, of 10 Beaumont Terrace, Spennymoor. He was a bank clerk prior to e gaining a commission in the 8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 11th January 1916. He was killed in action, on 1st July 1917, aged 26, whilst serving in the line near Cite-St. Pierre, France.
