Born at Clapham Common, London. Husband of Mary Anne Cornelius, of Acton Road, Fulwell, Sunderland. He was an iron moulder prior to enlisting on 17th October 1901 at Derby into the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He served in Hong Kong, 7th December 1903 to the 16th December 1904, Straits Settlements (Singapore) from 17th December 1901 to 7th December 1906 and India from 12th December 1906 to 22nd October 1912. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 11th March 1908 and was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 22nd October 1912. He went to France on 20th March 1917 and was posted to the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 12th April 1917 and prompted Company Sergeant Major on 5th June 1917. He was killed in action, 4th November 1918, during the attack at Sebourg, France.
