Born and lived at Tupton, Derbyshire. son of David and Martha, of 9 New Close Terrace, New Tupton, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Clay Cross, Derbyshire. He served in Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, during 1915 and was killed in action, 18th April 1918, whilst serving in the lines at Mesnil, France.
