Born at Westborough, Lincolnshire and lived at 37 William Street, Newark, Nottinghamshire. Son of William Richard and Hannah Copley, of Westborough. He was an ironworks apprentice at Ransome and Marle Limited, Newark, prior to enlisting on 9th September 1914 at Newark. He went to France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action, 13th April 1915, aged 21, whilst serving in the line at Kemmel, Belgium.
