Born at Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. and lived at Newstead, Nottinghamshire. Son of William and Eliza Cope, of Hucknall, Nottingham. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Hucknall. He was killed in action, 8th May 1916, aged 33, whilst serving in the trenches near Festubert, France.
