Born at Bakewell, Derbyshire and lived at Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Son of John and May Ann Cooper, of Bakewell, Derbyshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 25th January 1915 at Chesterfield, Derbyshire. He went to France on 25th March 1916 and was killed in action, 23rd April 1917, aged 41, in the attack at Fosse 3, Lievin, France.
