He was commissioned Second Lieutenant 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 1st March 1917. He was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 28, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
