Born at Bulwell, Nottingham. Son of Alfred and Julia Collier, of 16 Rawson Street, New Basford, Nottingham. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting on 5th December 1900 at Derby. He served in Malta from 5th July 1901 to 13th April 1902, South Africa from 25th April 1902 to 4th September 1902, Strait Settlements (Singapore) from 5th December 1904 to 10th December 1906 and India from 11th December 1906 to 22nd January 1909. He went to France on 10th October 1914. He was killed in action, on 15th July 1916, whilst attached to the South Staffordshire Regiment.
