Born and lived at Dore, Yorkshire. Son of Henry Philip and Sarah Coates, of Causeway Head Farm, Dore, Sheffield. Yorkshire. He was a farm labourer prior to enlisting on 16th November 1916 at Derby. He went to France 30th July 1917 and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 21, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact)
