He was born at Shirland, Derbyshire. Son of Arthur John and Fanny Eliza Clowes, of 46, Sherwood Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. He was a coal miner prior to enlisting at Sutton-in-Ashfield. He served in Gallipoli during 1915. Was awarded the Military Medal. London Gazette date 28th January 1918 ” For conspicuous gallantry on the 4th October 1917, when in the attack on the German lines (Pheasant Farm) near Poelcappelle, Belgium”. Killed in action in the attack at Sebourg, France, 4th November 1918.
