Born at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Son of William and Priscilla Clifford, of 22 Lower Brook Street, Long Eaton, Derbyshire. He enlisted at Derby and served in India. He went to France on 8th September 1914 and was killed in action on 20th October 1914, when the battalion held position south-east of Bois Grenier, Ennetieres/Escobecques, France against a German attack.
